Learn more about how New Jersey is transforming itself demographically in the 21st Century in New Jersey's Emerging Demographic Profile by James W. Hughes, Dean of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University.
  • 24% of New Jersey residents speak a language other than English at home?
  • Almost one in five of all New Jersey residents are foreign born.
  • Charles Seabrook produced the first frozen food in 1933. He built villages and schools for his workers, who included Japanese Americans released from internment camps to work at Seabrook Farms and war refugees from Europe. During the 1940s and 1950s, more than thirty languages were spoken at Seabrook Farms.
  • The Borough of Roosevelt is the only municipality in New Jersey that is, in its entirety, a registered National Historic Site. Roosevelt is a fairly new borough, having been established in 1937 under Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal." Most of the original settlers were Jewish garment workers from New York.
